TL;DR version: Dramiel pops Catalyst! Fatality! (Do not laugh much at the fit, had I known that the DCU was meta 4 I’d never flown it. )
It was a boring night, mostly. Some POS work had to be done, the usual story – taking production into a safe place, fuel management, etc. Yawn. It is a good source of income, but it’s a PIA too. Especially the fact that, in one case, a silo can hold at most 66-hours worth of production. I really need some coupling arrays…
With my carebear tasks complete, I decided to check the local miners and maybe make them fight. Nada. Just a single Wreathe mining. I felt sorry for the guy. Like that guy in an Osprey the last week – a week-old character, mining in an Osprey, looking so delicious and yet…let’s say I don’t like kicking babies/puppies/small cute animals. There is no need for excessive cruelty. Cruelty has to be measured precisely.
Anyway, with no targets around, I decided to make myself a target, mining happily some veldspar. And voila! – a customer approaches. A fracking Dramiel. Crap. I hate those ships. Mostly because I have no ship to counter them and they look like glued-together poopcicles. I had the advantage of the asteroids around the jetcan, but the Dramiel is agile enough not to be bothered much by them. So, I decided to go on a suicide mission with an old rail-fitted Catalyst, which was just accumulating dust anyway. The Dramiel’s great falloff bonus will surely make him stay away from me, making him a better target. Yeah, right.
Undock, warp to 0, modules hot, heroic visions of a Catalyst popping a Dramiel…just to land and see the Dramiel burning happily up, to make a safespot, 4+ km/s. I warped away to a safespot of my own, aligned back to the can, saw the Dramiel on d-scan and warped back. He landed seconds after me, I got a lock on him and started shooting, but instead staying happily 15+ km away from me, he came to 1.8km, making my life miserable. With no web and no scram, but a disruptor, I was doomed. The fit was meant for a long-range fight and no tracking bonuses could have saved me in a close range. So my poor ship became a wreck, as the KM above shows. We exchanged 2 ‘gf’-s, he admitted that the asteroids did little to hamper him and then he departed from the system.
Later, while examining the KM, I was given more misery, seeing that the DCU was meta 4, which nets to around 12-13M and the total loss coming to 16M. From a Catalyst. Damn I’m stupid. Note to self – check the meta, before making scrap ships. There is a good side to this engagement though – now I’m more than interested in creating a viable Dramiel-killing destroyer fit. After all, the destroyer is an anti-frigate ship and the Dramiel is a frigate, so 1+1=2…or is it?
PS. Curse you Einstein, for making everything relative.
